Navigating the Main Menu
========================
Since you've gotten to read these instructions, it's safe to assume that you've
figured out how to work the HotKey menus. Simply type the letter of the
selection you wish to choose. Besides Instructions and Quit, which are both
pretty straight-forward, the following options are available at the main menu:
Rank Players: This option shows a list of all people on the BBS who have won
games of Empire 1901, since the last time the door was reset.
This list shows the number of points each person has for winning
games, which will be discussed more in section K, Winning the
Game.
List Games: This selection shows a list of all currently active games.
There can be as many as 255 games active at once in the door.
The first column shows the game number, which can range from 0
to 254. The second column, labeled "Player", tells you whether
or not you are an active player in the game. An active player
is defined as anyone in a game waiting to begin, or a player in
a game which is currently being played, who has not yet been
eliminated. The third column, labeled "Season/Status", tells
whether that particular game is open to new players, open to new
players and starting on the next day, closed to new players (and
starting the next day), or the season of a game in progress.
(Seasons will be discussed in section E, Spring Moves.)
Select Game: This option is what actually allows you to play in a particular
game. When you choose Select Game, you will be prompted to
enter a game number, which can be found by Listing Games. If
the game you enter is open to new players, you will be shown the
names of the players currently in it. If you are not already
active in the maximum number of active games per player (which
number is set by the Sysop of the host BBS), you will be asked
if you wish to join the game. When 5 or more players are active
in a new game, it will be set to start on the next day, allowing
up to two more players to join before then, for a total of 7.
If you are already active in the open game you select, and the
game is NOT flagged to start on the next day, you will be asked
if you wish to withdraw from the game. A player may NOT with-
draw from a game set to start the next day, as this could result
in a game starting with fewer than 5 players. If the game you
select is already in progress, you will be taken to the game
menu, discussed in section C.
Begin Game: This option will allow you to start a new game, and automatical-
ly join it as a player. Only choose this option if there are no
games already open to new players; nothing is more infuriating
to four people waiting for their open game to start, than to see
someone starting yet another new game. If you withdraw from a
game with the Select Game command, and you are the only active
player in it, the game will be deleted from the game list.
